Dr. Fred Moss is a holistic psychiatrist serving in many capacities: telepsychiatrist, speaker, psychiatry expert witness, telehealth educator, mental health coach, and filmmaker.
A graduate of Northwestern University Medical School, board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1993, and certified by the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners in 2008, he holds active medical licenses in Illinois and California.
A desire to help people has been the force leading him to various settings and roles as a psychiatrist over the years, and compelling him to continually look for better, more effective ways to provide the highest quality care. After medical school, Dr. Moss jumped in with both feet, working as an admitting psychiatrist at a state hospital, performing pro bono psychiatric consulting at a homeless shelter, and founding his private practice in suburban Cincinnati. During this time, he was also a consultant to nursing homes, performed patient reviews for insurance companies and other third parties, held the role of medical director at an orphanage, and evaluated workers' compensation claims.
In the nearly two decades he spent in private practice, Dr. Moss treated thousands of patients of all ages and addressed numerous conditions. But eventually the business management that running a private practice requires (invoicing, overhead, collections, etc.) pulled him away from the very reason he became a psychiatrist. That's when he discovered locum tenens and with it came a renewed passion for helping people. His assignments took him to inpatient geriatric units, state prisons, and other settings.
As online technology progressed, Dr. Moss began to see telepsychiatry as an exciting way to combine revolutionary technology with deep communication and human connection, to enable virtual provider-client visits that match or even exceed those conducted in-person. He founded MasteringTelehealth, a consulting service, online course, and community for health organizations dedicated to delivering exceptional virtual care -- just one more arrow in his quiver feeding his passion to help.
Continuing the quest to find better ways of helping people, Dr. Moss's most recent project, Global Madness, is a documentary series that explores the global state of mental health with a mission to discover new ways of talking about, diagnosing, and treating mental health.
